A note on where this came from...

I have spent twenty years trying to teach people how to be better at business in the real world - not the academic version, the actual one - and almost all of it starts in the same place: the conversation where one person has to ask another for the sale, and so often can't.

The four moves Gran teaches Dan in this book are not invented. They are the closest thing I have to a method, assembled over those twenty years from people far better at this than I am, and tested in rooms where it genuinely mattered whether they worked.

Gran herself is not invented either, or not entirely. She owes a great deal to my friend Jill - a long-standing client, and a woman who ran a discreet and very successful Auckland establishment for many years, and who understood more about reading people, and about the honest exchange of what each person actually needs, than anyone I have met before or since.

The particulars of Gran's life are fiction. The quality of her attention is Jill's, and I am grateful for it. But the book is not really about selling, and the longer I worked on it the more obvious that became. Its real subject arrived late, through Alan Watts, whose line about muddy water sits at the front of this book: muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.

Watts spent a career pointing at the thing most self-improvement gets backwards - that the striving to become someone better is often the very silt clouding the water. You do not add the clarity. You stop stirring, and the clarity that was always there returns. Dan spends this book believing there is something wrong with him that he has to fix.

What Gran teaches him, underneath the four moves, is that there was never anything to fix. There was a thing on top of him in the way.

The method is only a way of letting it come off. The method, in other words, is a path with an exit - and what you arrive at is the person who was there before you started trying.
