As an African-American male, I am sadly, yet keenly aware of prejudice, racism, and discrimination. When I was a teenager, my father taught me how to drive a car in the parking lot of Lake Michigan College. He taught me all the basics of how to turn left, right, and even parallel park. He explained to me what to do when I am stopped by the police: "Immediately let down your window, always address the officer by saying 'sir' or 'ma'am, ' never make a sudden movement." This particular driving lesson did not make a lot of sense that time, but now, as I look in the rearview mirror, it may have saved my life.
