Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary is the world's best selling learner s dictionary, having sold 35 million books worldwide. It is aimed at non-native speakers, with the first edition published over 65 years ago. Summary Of The Book The book first appeared in 1942 under the tile, Idiomatic And Syntactic Dictionary in Japan. It was written by Albert Sydney Hornby, a teacher of English Studies, as a guide to non-native English readers. Later, it was published under the current title of Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. Now in its eighth edition, the book contains a 1000 new words and many useful linguistic resources. Academic Word List words are highlighted in the dictionary, and the Oxford 3000 wordlist helps students quickly learn the most important words in the language. Synonyms and topic collocation notes help students add new words more easily to their vocabulary by associating them with other words and the topics they refer to. A 64 page Visual Vocabulary Builder section contains numerous illustrations and color photos to clarify the meanings of words. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary contains a 32-page writing tutor to help students plan, write and review their writing projects. The accompanying CD contains many additional resources to further enrich the learning experience. The interactive, whiteboard-friendly CD-ROM contains a thesaurus, topic vocabulary bank, cultural guides and word origin notes, and pronunciation guides. The CD includes the Oxford iWriter software that helps students plan and write essays and other written projects. The A-Z dictionary creates a complete reference tool for learners of English. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary also helps with teaching and learning dictionary skills, and has exercises for practice, mainly to learn the Academy World List.
