About this book

Water is our most fundamental natural resource, a resource that is limited. Challenges to our nation's water resources continue to grow, driven by population growth, ecological needs, climate change, and other pressures. The nation needs more and improved water science and information to meet these challenges.

Toward a Sustainable and Secure Water Future reviews the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Resource Discipline (WRD), one of the nation's foremost water science organizations. This book provides constructive advice to help the WRD meet the nation's water needs over the coming decades. Of interest primarily to the leadership of the USGS WRD, many findings and recommendations also target the USGS leadership and the Department of Interior (DOI), because their support is necessary for the WRD to respond to the water needs of the nation.

Indus River Basin

Indus River Basin: Water Security and Sustainability provides a comprehensive treatment of water-related issues within the Indus River basin. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field, hence this book serves as a single, holistic source covering the whole region, not just a single country. Many of the challenges faced by this region are trans-boundary issues, especially within the context of climate change and water scarcity. Topics covered include extreme engineering and water resource management (one of the largest irrigation systems in dry to semi-desert conditions), social sciences (population dynamics linked to water resources) and political sciences.

As such, this book is relevant and important to all researchers interested in these issues.

Sadiq Khan is an associate scientist at University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) based at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, National Water Center (NWC). Prior to joining the NWC, he was a research scientist in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma (OU). Dr. Khan received his Ph.D in 2011 from OU, where he was the recipient of NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship. He was selected for an outstanding student paper award for the research work he presented at American Geophysical Union Fall 2009 Meeting in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Khan's main research interests include; 1) multi-source data fusion in hydrology, particularly optical and microwave remote sensing for water resource monitoring; 2) numerical and geospatial modelling to estimate hydrologic variables and therefore better predict water extremes.
Thomas E. Adams, III, Hydrologist/AWIPS Software Testing, Fairfield Technologies, Inc., Silver Spring, MD, USA
Visiting Scientist, NOAA/NWS National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, AL, USA
Thomas E. Adams, III, has twenty years of real-time operational hydrologic forecasting experience at the NOAA/National Weather Service (NWS), Ohio River Forecast Center (OHRFC), including model parameter estimation, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and model calibration. His experience includes development and implementation of the Ohio River Community HEC-RAS Model, operational probabilistic/ensemble hydrologic forecasting, precipitation estimation and analysis, land surface/atmosphere interaction, and impact of global climate change on water resources.
He is currently involved with Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) software development and testing for the NWS and served as flash flood forecasting expert in Beijing, China. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, American Meteorological Society, American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Soil Science Society of America.
