A Step Outside is a book about exploring the nature, history and philosophy of our environs. Herein you will discover 52 short pieces written weekly over the course of a year that delve into a variety of themes-historical, literary, philosophical, architectural, topological, geological and lexicographical. Each essay seeks to inspire the reader to head outside and indulge their curiosity. The act of exploring the land can be one of transcendence, moving our spirits beyond ego to immanence. We can become experts in our environs and stewards of the natural world. Understanding our surroundings indulges our curiosity, expands our intellect, and inculcates our souls. Just one step outside is all it takes.

Michael Faherty is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania. Raised on Long Island, Michael has also lived in Illinois, Georgia, and New York City. He currently resides with his family in northern New Jersey.
