In the spring of 1948, Evelyn 'Evie" Dahms's husband, Fred, a World War II American Air Force veteran, receives a call from one of his war buddies about a too-good-to-be-true airline job in Rome. Excited about the new prospect, Evie and Fred calculate that they can pay off their California home and be debt free within a year. The newlyweds take the plunge, knowing little of what awaits.

Evie and Fred soon discover the airline is a front for the Zionist movement to help the infant state of Israel. Surrounded by hostile Arab countries, Israel is struggling to survive. Even though Fred is not Jewish, he, along with other non-Jews, risks his life to smuggle airplanes and armaments to the newborn state.
