A missing-person case opens in Masonville, North Carolina, on April 9, 1975. Christine Wild, a local married woman, is never found. As the years pass for a local policeman looking for a break in the case, the leads slow down and the trail gets cold. But no case ever becomes so cold as to be entirely forgotten..

Thirty years later, the lives of three men intersect in the search for answers: an author searching for a new story, a retired judge looking for closure, and a rural-county police detective wanting to clear the case from the books.
