Every day, optometrists are uniquely positioned to detect not only disorders of the eye but also early signs of systemic disease and broader health imbalances. For students entering the profession and wondering how four years can be devoted solely to the study of eyes, the answer is simple: the eyes are an extension of the body and often provide one of the earliest windows into overall health. Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and countless other disorders frequently reveal themselves through changes in the eyes and visual system long before other symptoms appear.
