By: Albert Bruce Pruitt, pub. 1989, reprinted 2026, Index, 872 pages, Soft Cover, ISBN # 978-0-89308-553-7. Spartanburg County was created in 1785 out of the Ninety-Six District, which was considered the backcountry or frontier settlement of SC in its early development. With the great wagon road running through the county, Spartanburg County saw large numbers of persons heading into the piedmont country or backcountry of the Carolinas. It is surrounded by the present-day counties of Cherokee, Greenville, Laurens, and Union Counties, S.C. and to the North by Cleveland, Polk and Rutherford Counties, N.C. Spartanburg County included a large portion of present Cherokee County, S.C. and was bordered by Greenville, Laurens, and Union Counties, S.C. and Rutherford County, North Carolina. The border changes between Spartanburg, Greenville, and Union counties make it an important tool for researching those counties as well. Deeds are one of the favorite research tools of genealogists due to the wide variety of persons being mentioned within them. The index mentions approximately 18,500 persons.
