Two Tudor Subsidy Assessment Rolls for the City of London 1541 and 1582

A revealing collection of archive material on two lay assessments for Tudor London, shedding light on the makeup of the city

The documents collected in this volume reveal the makeup of sixteenth century London, through the assessments carried out in 1541 and 1582, in order to calculate the amount of money that the taxpayers would have to pay to parliament. These two documents give the names of the collectors for the various wards and parishes as well as of 3,433 residents of London valued and assessed for the subsidy in 1541 and 5,900 in 1582. The subsidy acts required valuation and assessment of companies as well as individuals, and 35 companies in 1541 and 40 in 1582 paid toward the subsidy in London.
