Born to a wealthy British family, Evelyn Cameron came to Montana with her husband in 1894 to raise polo ponies. To support the ranch, Cameron took in boarders and sold produce--but her most successful venture began when she ordered a camera by mail. Her crisp black-and-white images capture the rhythms of western life--cowboys truss horses for branding, children dressed in their Sunday best peer out the doorway, and housewives show off prized poultry.
