Pilgrimage of Amos

t's a new age dawning, and Amos hits the road - leaving Canada with a head full of nineteenth-century romantic idealism and a hunger for the art, history, and culture of Europe and the Mediterranean. Hitchhiking through England, Spain, and into Morocco, he falls in with missionaries, freaks, and a beautiful English girl who leads him on his journey like Dante's Beatrice. By the time he reaches Tangier, he has been accused of everything - yet he forgives, and comes to understand that the road provides, and what survives, abides.

Caught between alien grounds where minaret and cross stand side by side, and drugs and mystical fevers blur the edges of self, Amos struggles to hold onto a mind in constant turmoil, grasping for solid ground amid the "destroyed rubble of a tottering edifice of being." The Pilgrimage of Amos is a hitchhiker's odyssey of faith, disillusionment, and the strange grace of the road - one summer, one road, Europe as his classroom, Morocco his awakening.
