Rain hammers a cold and cruel city, and beneath the storm, a young woman lies on a slab in the morgue; a pretty face from a rich district, a Jane Doe no one important wants explained. Three men refuse to let her rest, and no two of them are on the same side.

Clark is an assassin who reads esoteric books between contracts and walks a measured mile at midnight, Greenwich time, because zero o'clock is the only hour that feels honest to him. Precise, philosophical, and quietly coming apart, he is a man trying to out-walk a love he buried and a past that won't stay buried with it.

Niccolò is the glib agent who never accepts the easy story: a quick-tongued Italian from the organized-crime taskforce forever chasing the ghost of a girl he loved as a boy, who quotes Guinizelli and Petrarch and reads the dead woman as a thread leading straight into the one family this city is too afraid to name.

As the investigation drags the city's rot into the light, the question stops being about who killed her and becomes what each of these men will do for love, or for the ruin they insist on calling justice or peace. Here, good is too weak to be of any use and evil is fought only with lesser evils; the only philosophy is the argument that brings a loaded gun.
