THE GREAT STRUGGLE of modern man is worlds apart from that which consumed the existence of our forebears: it commences at the very point survival is mostly taken care of. Indeed, it may be because survival is so easily taken care of.

For the 'mastery' of the human race has only mired us in a depression, anxiety and obesity epidemic and condemned our home planet to an environmental armageddon from which there appears to be no salvation. We are fat, sad and some say with the advent of the likes of AI-doomed!

Modern life you promised so,

And convenience and comfort to my nerve endings you did bestow,

But the pound of flesh you demand without letting me go,

To be paid in my soul's woe,

Makes me wonder, I don't know,

Whether, despite every hi-fi sci-fi gizmo,

And all the smoke and show,
