Dramatic Works of Lyof N. Tolstoï

"The Dramatic Works of Lyof N. Tolstoï" offers a compelling exploration of the theatrical legacy of one of Russia's most influential literary figures. While Leo Tolstoy is primarily celebrated for his monumental novels, his dramatic writings provide a vital and sharp perspective on the social and moral fabric of his era. This collection brings together his most significant plays, highlighting his transition from the vast canvas of prose to the focused intensity of the stage.

The works included within this volume, such as "The Power of Darkness," "The Fruits of Enlightenment," and "The Living Corpse," showcase Tolstoy's mastery of social realism and his relentless pursuit of ethical truth. From the stark, tragic realities of peasant life to the biting satirical critique of the Russian upper class and their obsession with spiritualism, these plays confront the complexities of human nature, marriage, and institutional corruption. Tolstoy's dramatic voice is characterized by its psychological depth and its refusal to shy away from the darker aspects of the human soul. This collection is an essential resource for those seeking to understand the full breadth of Tolstoy's creative genius and his enduring impact on world literature and drama.
