Portrait of a Dog

"Portrait of a Dog" is a moving and intimate tribute to the bond between humans and their canine companions. Written by the celebrated Canadian author Mazo de la Roche, this work offers a deeply personal narrative centered on the life of her beloved Scottish Terrier, Bunty. Through a series of vignettes and observations, De la Roche captures the distinct personality, loyalty, and spirited nature of her dog, painting a vivid picture of their years together.

Beyond a simple pet biography, "Portrait of a Dog" serves as an exploration of the emotional landscapes shared by owners and pets. De la Roche's prose is both lyrical and evocative, showcasing the same keen insight into character and atmosphere that defined her famous Jalna series. The book reflects the early 20th-century appreciation for animal narratives and remains a significant example of literary non-fiction from one of Canada's most prominent writers. Readers will find a heartwarming yet unsentimental depiction of companionship that resonates across generations. This work stands as a testament to the enduring presence of dogs in our lives and the profound impact they leave on the human heart.
