Venice 1930. Three clients contact the Venier-Zanin law firm to discuss a bizarre clause in a loan contract: under the contract terms, borrowers are required to use a specific shipping company until the loan is fully repaid.

Rachele is sure that the connection between the bank and the shipping company holds the key to understanding that clause.

Two of her clients, Wolfgang Meyer and Rachele's brother, Daniele Modiano, wish to learn more about the shipping company and plan to pay separate visits to the managing director on the same afternoon. The managing director, Enrico Fontana, is found dead late the same day. Wolfgang Meyer and Daniele Modiano were the last two entries in his diary; the police want to talk to them.

Who killed Enrico Fontana? What was the connection between the bank and the shipping company? Why do the Swiss police ask for Rachele's cooperation?

Rachele needs to find an answer to those questions to prove that her brother and her client had nothing to do with the murder.
