The sandwich was named after John Montagu of Sandwich. He was an eighteenth-century English aristocrat. It's a mobile way of eating a meal. Two slices of bread and a filling. Well, it could be two slices of bread, or it could be a roll, or even just an open sandwich.
There are variants of the sandwich which could well turn out as hamburgers, or even the South African Bunny Chow which is a quarter loaf of bread filled with a curry.
