Venice Preserved is a play written by Thomas Otway in 1682. The play is set in Venice during the 17th century and revolves around the story of Jaffeir and Pierre, two friends who become involved in a plot to overthrow the Venetian government. Jaffeir is in love with Belvidera, a senator's daughter, and is persuaded by Pierre to join the conspiracy in order to secure her hand in marriage. However, the plot is discovered and the conspirators are arrested and tortured. Jaffeir is given the choice of betraying his friends or watching Belvidera suffer the same fate. The play explores themes of loyalty, love, and betrayal, and is considered one of the greatest tragedies of the Restoration period. Otway's use of language and dramatic tension has been praised by critics, and the play remains a popular choice for theatre productions today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
