Forests Of Maryland (1916)

The Forests of Maryland is a comprehensive guide to the forests and timber resources of the state of Maryland, written by Fred Wilson Besley in 1916. The book provides a detailed overview of the history, geography, and ecology of Maryland's forests, as well as an exploration of the state's timber industry and the various species of trees found within its borders.Besley begins by discussing the history of Maryland's forests, from their early days as a vast wilderness to their gradual transformation into a valuable resource for the state's growing population. He then delves into the various types of forests found in Maryland, including upland hardwoods, pine forests, and swamp forests, and provides detailed descriptions of the trees and other plants that make up each ecosystem. The book also includes a thorough examination of the state's timber industry, including the methods used to harvest and transport timber, as well as the various products that are made from Maryland's trees. Besley explores the economic importance of the timber industry to the state, as well as its impact on the environment and the people who depend on the forests for their livelihoods.Throughout the book, Besley provides numerous illustrations and photographs to help readers better understand the forests of Maryland and the many species of trees and other plants that call them home. The Forests of Maryland is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history, ecology, or economy of the state's forests, and remains an important work in the field of forestry more than a century after its initial publication. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
