Harrington And His Oceana: A Study Of A Seventeenth Century Utopia And Its Influence In America (1914) is a scholarly work by Hugh Francis Russell Smith that explores the political philosophy of James Harrington, a seventeenth-century English writer and political theorist. The book delves into Harrington's most famous work, Oceana, which presents a vision of an ideal society based on a system of agrarian democracy. Smith examines the historical context in which Harrington wrote and the impact of his ideas on American political thought, particularly during the American Revolution. The book provides a detailed analysis of Harrington's political philosophy, including his ideas on the distribution of power, the role of the citizenry, and the importance of land ownership.
