The story follows the romantic relationship between Chaereas, a wealthy Athenian, and Callirrhoe, a beautiful and virtuous woman from Syracuse. The two fall in love at first sight and are soon married, but their happiness is short-lived as Callirrhoe is kidnapped by pirates and taken to Miletus. Chaereas sets out to rescue her, encountering various obstacles along the way, including jealous suitors and a false accusation of murder.
