Schiller's Maid Of Orleans (1899)

Schiller's Maid of Orleans is a play written by the German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller in 1801. The play is set in France during the Hundred Years' War and tells the story of Joan of Arc, a young peasant girl who hears voices from God and leads the French army to victory against the English. The play explores themes of faith, destiny, and the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated world. Schiller portrays Joan as a heroic figure who is guided by her faith and conviction, but also as a vulnerable young woman who is torn between her duty to God and her love for a nobleman. The play is divided into five acts and features a cast of historical figures such as King Charles VII, the Duke of Burgundy, and the English commander Talbot. Schiller's poetic language and vivid imagery bring the characters and setting to life, creating a powerful and emotional experience for the reader. Schiller's Maid of Orleans has been widely praised for its portrayal of Joan of Arc as a complex and multifaceted character, and for its exploration of themes that are still relevant today. This 1899 edition of the play features an English translation by William Peterfield Trent, making it accessible to a wider audience. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
