Philosophy Of Plotinos: His Life, Times And Philosophy

The Philosophy of Plotinos: His Life, Times and Philosophy is a comprehensive study of the life and works of Plotinos, a prominent philosopher of the third century AD. The book is written by Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie, a renowned scholar of ancient philosophy. The book provides a detailed account of Plotinos' life, his intellectual background, and the historical and cultural context in which he lived and worked. The book delves into Plotinos' philosophy, which is based on the concept of the One, a transcendent and ineffable principle that is the source of all existence. The One is often equated with God or the divine, and Plotinos' philosophy is considered a form of Neoplatonism, a school of thought that developed in the late Hellenistic period. The book covers Plotinos' major works, including the Enneads, a collection of writings that expound his philosophical ideas. The Enneads cover a wide range of topics, including metaphysics, ethics, and theology. The book also examines Plotinos' influence on later philosophers, including Augustine, Aquinas, and Hegel. Overall, The Philosophy of Plotinos: His Life, Times and Philosophy is an essential resource for anyone interested in ancient philosophy, Neoplatonism, or the intellectual history of the ancient world. The book is written in a clear and accessible style, making it suitable for both scholars and general readers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
