Fountain Of Self-Love: Or Cynthia's Revels (1908)

The Fountain of Self-Love, also known as Cynthia's Revels, is a play written by Ben Jonson in 1601. The play is a satirical comedy that follows the story of a young courtier named Crites, who is obsessed with himself and his own appearance. He spends his days primping and preening, and his nights attending lavish parties and revels. The play is set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, and features a cast of characters that includes poets, courtiers, and ladies-in-waiting. The main plot revolves around Crites' attempts to win the heart of the beautiful and virtuous Cynthia, who is immune to his charms and sees through his vanity. As the play unfolds, the characters engage in witty banter and engage in a series of comic misadventures. Jonson uses the play to satirize the courtly culture of his time, and to poke fun at the vanity and self-absorption of the courtiers and poets who populated the Elizabethan court. The Fountain of Self-Love is a classic example of Jonson's distinctive style of comedy, which is characterized by its sharp wit, its use of classical allusions, and its moralistic tone. The play remains popular with audiences and scholars alike, and is considered a masterwork of English Renaissance drama. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
