Charity And The Clergy: Being A Review By A Protestant Clergyman Of The New Themes Controversy (1853

Charity And The Clergy is a book written in 1853 by Stephen Colwell, a Protestant clergyman. The book is a review of the New Themes Controversy, which was a debate within the Presbyterian Church in the United States over the use of hymns and musical instruments in worship services. Colwell argues that the controversy is not about the use of hymns or musical instruments, but rather about the role of the clergy in promoting charity and love among the congregation. He believes that the clergy should focus on promoting these values rather than enforcing strict rules about worship practices. The book is written in a scholarly style, with references to historical and theological texts. It is aimed at a religious audience, particularly those interested in the Presbyterian Church and its debates. Overall, Charity And The Clergy is a thoughtful and nuanced exploration of a complex religious issue, written by a respected member of the clergy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
