The Real Bearings Of The West India Question: As Expounded By The Most Intelligent And Independent Free-Trader Of The Day (1848) is a book written by Matthew James Higgins. The book explores the West India Question, which was a debate in the 19th century about the abolition of slavery and the economic impact it would have on the British West Indies. Higgins, who was a prominent free-trader, presents his views on the issue and argues that the abolition of slavery would ultimately benefit the economy of the British West Indies. He also discusses the potential impact on the British economy and suggests that the country should focus on free trade rather than protectionism. The book is written in a persuasive and argumentative style, with Higgins using examples and statistics to support his claims. It provides a unique insight into the economic and political debates of the 19th century and is still relevant today in discussions about free trade and the impact of economic policies on different regions. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
