Sidney Turner's The Kennel Encyclopaedia (1907) and Edward C. Ash's The Practical Dog Book (1930). The bat-eared bulldog was an Edwardian society craze on both sides of the Atlantic; the poodle was still understood as a working water dog, not a salon ornament; and the spaniels were shooting dogs first and last.

Points, temperament, working ability, celebrated dogs and their pedigrees are set out for each breed, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
