Three guarding breeds - one of them invented from scratch by a tax collector who wanted protection on his rounds.

The Working Dog Vol. I - A Complete Anthology of the Breeds covers the Doberman Pinscher, the Great Dane and the Mastiff, in chapters taken from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1935, among them H. W. Huntington's My Dog and I (1897), Arthur Craven's Dogs of the World (1931) and Walter Hutchinson's Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia (1935).

The Doberman was made in the 1890s by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector and dog-pound keeper in Thuringia; the Mastiff, by contrast, is the ancient English holdover, and would be rebuilt from a handful of dogs after 1945. These chapters catch all three in the years between.

This edition features:

  • Three breeds in one volume: Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane and Mastiff
  • Chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1935, by the authorities of their day
  • Points, temperament and guarding character, with the pedigrees of celebrated winners
  • The original photographs of the leading dogs of the era, reproduced throughout
