The smallest of the working gun dogs, at the point where it finally became a breed of its own.
The Cocker Spaniel - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers breed chapters from the rare kennel literature of the late Victorian and early twentieth-century fancy, among them Rawdon B. Lee's A History and Description of the Modern Dogs of Great Britain and Ireland. For most of the nineteenth century the spaniels came from the same litters and were sorted by size and by the game they worked; a breed club of its own did not arrive until 1902, and these writers are watching the separation happen.
Points, coat, temperament, field ability, celebrated dogs and their pedigrees are all set out, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
