Black Baseball in Cincinnati: A History

Cincinnati is regarded as one of the most important cities in professional baseball history, and that history includes Negro League baseball. Cincinnati was home to three major Negro League Teams: the Cincinnati-Cuban Stars, the Cincinnati Tigers and the Cincinnati Clowns. In addition, several black semi-professional teams played a part in the formation of Cincinnati's Negro League teams. This book is a chronological exploration of Black baseball in Cincinnati, covering both professional and semi-professional African American players from 1870-1970.

Being geographically situated between the North and South, Cincinnati has been at the center of racial tensions throughout its history. African Americans in Cincinnati overcame endemic racist attitudes to organize these competitive professional baseball teams. Through the efforts of many, some anonymous and others who are known yet under recognized, Negro League baseball found a home in Cincinnati. This book presents a rich history of Cincinnati baseball through the lives of its black contributors, both on and off the field.
