Like many women, Mary Ann Fernandez never thought she would find herself in an abusive relationship. She would never get involved with someone like that-she would recognize the red flags and stay far away.

Unfortunately, she learned the hard way that abuse doesn't discriminate, and it often shows up in a careful disguise. What seemed to be a loving marriage slowly became her worst nightmare, and soon she was being ravaged by emotional and physical destruction at the hands of the person who was supposed to love her most. For ten years, she tried desperately to fix this relationship-one that should never have happened in the first place.

This is Fernandez's story in her own words, and it serves multiple purposes.
