DYMER - - A Poetic Vision of Desire, Rebellion, and Spiritual Awakening

C. S. Lewis's early narrative poem of rebellion, exile, and the perilous search for transcendence.

First published in 1926 under a pseudonym, Dymer stands apart within C. S. Lewis's body of work as a dark and symbolically charged narrative poem. It recounts the story of a young man who flees a rigid, oppressive society in pursuit of freedom, only to encounter a world that is at once seductive and destructive. The poem traces his journey through temptation, violence, and revelation, offering an allegory of modern dislocation and spiritual unrest.

Composed before Lewis's conversion to Christianity, Dymer reflects his early engagement with romanticism, mythic imagination, and philosophical doubt. The work anticipates themes later developed in his fiction and apologetic writing-particularly the tension between individual will and moral order. As a rare and formative text, Dymer provides insight into the intellectual and imaginative development of one of the twentieth century's most influential writers.
