Histories Book 7: Polymnia

The seventh book of Herodotus' Histories recounts the dramatic advance of the Persian Empire under Xerxes and the opening campaigns of the Greco-Persian War.

In Polymnia, Herodotus turns his attention to one of the most famous conflicts of the ancient world. King Xerxes of Persia gathers an immense army drawn from across his vast empire and prepares an invasion of Greece intended to complete the work begun by his father, Darius. As the Persian host marches westward, Herodotus describes the peoples of the empire, the political tensions among the Greek city-states, and the preparations made to resist the coming invasion.

The narrative culminates in the legendary Battle of Thermopylae, where the Spartan king Leonidas and his small allied force confront Xerxes' overwhelming army in one of history's most celebrated last stands. Blending historical narrative, ethnographic observation, and vivid storytelling, Herodotus presents both the scale of the Persian campaign and the courage of those who opposed it.

Often called the "Father of History," Herodotus produced one of the earliest great works of historical writing. Polymnia, the seventh book of The Histories, remains a foundational account of the Greco-Persian Wars and one of the most dramatic episodes in classical history.
