Behaviour Chain Principle: Understanding Why People Do What They Do

Why do people do what they do?

And why does behaviour so often appear suddenly, without warning, and leave everyone around it wondering what just happened?

The Behaviour Chain Principle offers a clear and compelling answer.

Drawing on sixteen years of frontline acute mental health nursing and a Master of Mental Health Nursing, Joanne Eussen introduces a practical framework that changes the way support workers, clinicians, carers, and disability sector professionals understand and respond to behaviour.

The core idea is simple and profound.

Behaviour is never the beginning of the story. It is the end of it.

By the time a person raises their voice, withdraws, refuses, or escalates, a chain of internal events has already taken place. Environment has shaped the moment. Memory has contributed its weight. Emotion has been activated. Expectation has formed. What looks sudden from the outside has been building through every link in the chain.

The Behaviour Chain Principle walks you through each of those links, what they are, how they interact, and what becomes possible when you learn to see them before behaviour appears.

Practical, humane, and written specifically for the people who do this work every day, this book will change how you see the people you support.

And how you see yourself in the interaction.
