Tanks in Unexpected Places examines how fighting effectiveness was generated and sustained during the Second World War. Its focus, the 4th Independent Armoured Brigade, belonged to the relatively small minority of British formations that served across multiple theatres during the conflict. The book argues that the brigade's wide deployment stemmed largely from its ability to create and maintain a high level of fighting effectiveness.

To explore this, the study analyses three key areas at the tactical level in the British Army between 1943 and 1945: leadership, morale, and organisational learning. Drawing on extensive archival research--including previously unseen documents--as well as participant interviews, Tanks in Unexpected Places reconstructs the history, role, and organisational culture of the 4th Armoured Brigade.

It addresses key questions: why was this brigade repeatedly assigned the most difficult problems, and how did it produce three future Chiefs of the General Staff? This work will appeal to historians, military professionals, and anyone interested in the British Army during the Second World War.
