Herb Gamberg learned in graduate school to take an axe to controversial ideas, and he did so with gusto. He loved talking about and discussing ideas, but he was a reluctant writer. He left many of his essays unpublished, a selection of which is included in this anthology. In addition to a memoir, his essays discuss science, feminism, education, power, bureaucracy, postmodernism, the fate of the Russian and Chinese revolutions, the contemporary left, Marxist political theory, and fascism. Herb passed away in 2025. He had lived in a world of ideas and debates. We hope this book helps readers continue their internal dialogue with Herb.
