Amulets of the First Millennium Bce in the Nile Delta: Continuity and Change Through Production, Con

This book deals with trends in the production, consumption and circulation of amulets in the Egyptian Nile Delta during the first millennium BCE. Firstly, it presents the 19 selected sites from the region with a focus on the amulet finds, their spheres of use, dating and typological trends. Secondly, it classifies and analyses these amulets based on the iconographic typology and offers a comprehensive overview of the corpus, discussing the stylistic execution, materials and their symbolism, as well as the archaeological contexts in which the objects were found. It presents the underlying trends in the choice of amulets, highlighting differences and similarities based on these parameters, as well as considering their implications for the geopolitical situation at urban centres within the Nile Delta. Based on the collected data, it discusses the evidence for amulet production and suggests possible workshops in the Nile Delta. Furthermore, it reflects on the standardisation of amulet production, observes the trade and circulation of objects within the region and beyond and addresses the broader social implications of the amulet use. Finally, it observes the trade routes and social interactions between ancient Egypt and the Mediterranean world.
The book includes a comprehensive iconographic typology with over 148 types and a catalogue of 3067 amulets and 74 moulds from the Nile Delta in the first millennium BCE.
