From the Belly: Poets Respond to Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons VOL III Rooms

From the Belly: Poets Respond to Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons, Volume III Rooms concludes the comprehensive compilation of poets' responses to the entirety of Stein's book-length poem. In work of their own, 29 poets respond to stanzas from the section "Rooms," perhaps the most political and narrative section of Stein's Modernist masterpiece. The editors have left space for the reader to join the conversation with writing of their own.

Says Jan Freeman, "This provocative and surprising final volume of Karren Alenier's three-part series of contemporary American poets responding to Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons offers readers a deep immersion into the classic celebration of Modernism. Through these poetic conversations between 29 American poets and Stein, readers experience Stein's wild questions, statements, and observations accompanied by a wide range of voices responding to each stanza of 'Rooms, ' including stellar poems by Sheila Black, Tracy Brimhall, Jeddy Sophronius, Jenna Nesky, Lisa Sewall, Sandy Yannone, and Alenier herself. This collection creates its own 21st century structure comprised of rooms and echoes propelled from Stein's exploration of order, disorder, and the spaces that separate, become, and inhabit us."
