The modern city is an engineering and architectural wonder. But in our quest for rapid vertical and technological expansion, we have also created situations that are not conducive to the natural movement of the human body. We are now experiencing an era in which urban planning favours the automobile over the individual. This transition has resulted in a silent but deadly catastrophe that undermines our physical health, our mental sharpness, and the financial health of our local governments. I authored The Impact of Sports on Urban Health as an urgent appeal for what I term urban integrity. The thought is that this is a healthy city, healthy like the people who walk its streets and play in its parks. Building roads is not the same as designing communities that need a sedentary lifestyle; it's building a future of chronic illness and mounting municipal debt.
