Blizzards - Bears - Hunger - True Survival

Fifteen-year-old Zeke is thrilled to be heading west with a wagon train of pioneers bound for California. But when the group takes a risky shortcut, the journey turns into a nightmare. Trapped in a frozen mountain pass, the settlers face wild animals, raging storms, and a hunger that won't let go.

Zeke isn't a mountain man-he's a horse-crazy kid from Illinois who's suddenly way out of his element. As the snow piles higher, he has to dig deep to find courage he never knew he had. Through hardship and danger, Zeke learns what it takes to survive and what it means to keep going when everything says quit.

But the mountains aren't finished with him yet. With the Donner Party running out of options, Zeke must risk everything in one desperate bid for escape.

Based on true events, this fast-paced adventure will grip readers from the first page. With short chapters, gripping action, and fascinating facts about the Oregon Trail, it's perfect for classrooms, family read-alouds, and even the most reluctant readers.
