American Dream: My Immigrant Journey of Gratitude and Belonging

One person fled the ruins of World War II Europe. Another migrated from El Salvador. Together, they built a new American life in the soil of the Golden State.

Henry A. Mulder arrived in California in 1957 carrying little more than a Dutchman's grit and a passion for horticulture. He didn't just plant seeds-he helped shape the floral industry. Together with his partner, Peter Van Os, he brought Dutch growing methods to San Mateo County, building a well-respected commercial flower nursery.

But the heart of this memoir beats within a singular love story. When Henry from the Netherlands met Martha from El Salvador, two worlds merged, creating a shared language of resilience. Their union is a testament to the truth that roots grown in hardship produce the most vibrant blooms. Henry's gratitude for his adopted homeland extended beyond the greenhouse, leading him to serve in the National Guard and the Knights of Columbus as a proud American citizen.

This is a masterclass in grit, greenhouses, and grace-the definitive story of how a displaced immigrant embodied the American Dream.
