A Love Story in the Time of the Great War is a fictional tale inspired by young love against the backdrop of World War I and the 1920s post-war years.

Philip Boughton was a Michigan boy who joined the Army to serve his country and see the world. Shortly before deployment, he meets the love of his life, Doris Bowman, in Syracuse, NY, and they marry after a whirlwind courtship.

Philip leaves to fight in France while Doris waits patiently at home, both dreaming of the day when they will finally begin their life together. When Philip returns, their hopes and dreams are short-lived as they find ways to navigate their new lives.

While author Sandra Gowing never met her grandparents, Doris and Philip, their photograph inspired her to spend eight years researching and crafting their heartbreaking story.
