Juliana, Dowager Countess of Courtney, and her protégé, Margaret Dashwood, take a stroll on Medway Bridge in Rochester, where they make the acquaintance of two visiting gentlemen. One is Spenser, Viscount Kintleford and the other, his cousin, Ralph Hodgson. Ralph Hodgson was attracted Margaret Dashwood but his rakish habits dismayed her.
