When her husband, a member of the Army Corps of Engineers, deploys to England in May 1943 to help prepare for the Allied invasion of Europe, Lotte Randel rents a house in Georgetown, where she settles with her two children. In letters written to her sister Freddie (Winifred) during the next two years, Lotte chronicles daily life during the war years and her changing attitudes toward the war itself.
Her strength, her wit, and her growing sense of the absurd sustain her, as does her love for her children and her husband. But nothing can prepare her for the tragedy that she will endure, or guide her as she tries to reassemble the fragments of a shattered life.
