Kami Saves the Playground

Preface
Kami Saves the Playground

Every neighborhood tells a story.

Some stories live in the laughter of children playing on cracked concrete. Some echo through the wisdom of elders sitting on worn benches, watching generations rise and fall. And some stories, too often, fade away when spaces that once held life, culture, and purpose are left to decay or disappear altogether.

Kami Saves the Playground is more than a children's story, it is a reflection, a call to action, and a vision for what our communities can become when we choose preservation over neglect, and legacy over loss. At its heart, this book speaks to the importance of protecting Black legacies within Black communities. It challenges us to take a closer look at the environments we've inherited, especially those that have become unsafe or forgotten, and ask: do these spaces still serve us, or is it time to rebuild with intention?

Through Kami's journey, we explore the power of transformation. Not just tearing down what is broken, but creating something meaningful in its place. Something rooted in pride. Something guided by history. Something designed for the future.

This story also bridges a critical gap, between youth and elders. In many ways, our communities are strongest when wisdom meets energy, when experience meets innovation. The playground becomes more than a place to play; it becomes a space where stories are passed down, where lessons are learned, and where respect for those who came before is cultivated in those who will carry the torch forward.

Kami Saves the Playground honors the leaders, activists, creators, and thinkers who have paved the way, those whose contributions deserve not only remembrance, but continuation. It encourages the next generation to see themselves as part of that legacy, not separate from it.

This book is a reminder: legacy is not just something we inherit, it is something we build, protect, and pass on. And sometimes, it starts with saving a playground.
