It is the year 1765 in colonial Georgia, and James Habersham faces troubles he never imagined. His ward, Camille Dupre, has eloped with his eldest son. His marriage is faltering. His health is failing. And at the same time, the colony he helps govern is descending into violence.

A leading merchant in Savannah and the elected president of the Georgia colonial assembly, Habersham stands at the center of mounting resistance to Great Britain's newly imposed Stamp Act. The citizens of Georgia are angry-and their anger is growing.

Known for his sharp temper and impulsive decisions, Habersham is also a man with secrets. As political tensions rise and personal loyalties are tested, he must find a way to steady both his household and his province before everything fractures beyond repair.
