Nine-year-old Eddie is very happy living at Mount St. Joseph, an orphanage run by religious sisters, who instruct him in the Faith and develop his talent for singing, until one day Mr. Jackson arrives seeking to adopt a boy. Mr. Jackson claims to be a devout Catholic and gives the Sisters letters of recommendation as proof of his character. Upon seeing Eddie's open, honest demeanor, he tells the Sisters that he must have Eddie, saying that the boy reminds him of his own boy who died a year ago. Eddie's misgivings about the man are not shared by the Sisters, who regret to part with him but trust that they are sending him to a good home. They remind him that he is always welcome to return to them if he is not treated well, and Eddie promises the Sisters that he will remain faithful to God and frequent the sacraments as often as possible. Little does he know how difficult it will be to keep this promise, for Mr. Jackson is actually a villainous thief who forces those under his control to participate in his crimes.
