About this book

I am Thalia, the Muse of Comedy, daughter of Memory, and I have been watching your species take itself seriously for three thousand years. I am tired. So I wrote a book.

On Hubris & Levity With Thalia is not self-help. Self-help assumes your problem is a shortage of systems. Your problem is that you believe you are the tragic lead in a prestige drama, and I am here to inform you, gently and then not gently, that you are a supporting character in a comedy. The sooner you accept the part, the sooner you get to enjoy the show.

I will take you from your own portable hubris, the kind you carry in your pocket like a vape pen, through Diogenes and his barrel, the DMV and its self-checkout machine, a dinner party in Athens that ended in falling figs, and the hyena, which I will defend to the death because the slander against my favorite animal has gone on long enough. Along the way I will teach you, directly, the actual mechanics of a laugh: what it is, why it works, and why you cannot manufacture the kind that matters most.

Then I will hand you the real secret, the one your scientists never weighed. Gravity is not the only force in this universe. There is another one, and it has been waiting for you to stop pressing down so it can finally lift.

Sixteen chapters. Three Interludes where I step out from behind the stories and teach you outright. One full reckoning with Plautus, two thousand years in the making. A defense of the hyena. A philosophy, not a framework, at the end.

Joseph wrote the words. I provided the perspective, the timing, and the duck. Whichever one of us you credit for the parts that made you laugh, the other one is currently arguing about it.

In loving memory of George Carlin, and for Margaret Cho.
