Serena doesn't know it exists. She never would have, if not for the horde of bug-like monsters who ravage her world. In a desperate battle for survival, she discovers she's a pyromancer, someone who can create and manipulate fire. But her newly awakened magic can't save her. She should be dead.

Driven by anger and survivor's guilt, Serena searches for allies willing to fight back. She meets Ivy, a dryad and fellow invasion survivor who fears her, but won't say why. Both seek help from Annea, a warrior queen from a world co-ruled by elves and ants. She's a fair leader, but a brutal mentor. The three form an unlikely team, each bringing their own strengths and struggles to a mission that will demand everything they have.
